The preconception and perinatal time period provide a unique opportunity. The genesis of some chronic disease can originate from adverse experiences within pregnancy and the first 1000 days. We have an opportunity to change the risk and decrease the occurrence of major disease states such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and mood disorders.
We believe our bodies are meant to be resilient. We just have to figure out the code. We also know we are uniquely individual. To further our understanding of how decisions impact health for a lifetime, we engage in research to target interventions to optimize outcomes in the perinatal time period.
Although 3.6 million more women received healthcare in 2015, rates of adverse birth outcomes basically remained unchanged. It is not just about access to care, but the quality of care that's given. We have to change the care we give.
